Lee v. Weisman

Main Content

Nathan Bishop Middle School in Providence, Rhode Island, had a tradition of inviting local clergy members to give opening and closing prayers at its graduation ceremony. Daniel and Vivian Weisman objected to the prayers given at their older daughter's graduation, and when they learned that a rabbi had been asked to give the prayers at their younger daughter Debbie's graduation, they decided to challenge the practice in court. The case eventually went to the Supreme Court, posing important questions about the role of religion in public life.
