Having worked in both the police department and sheriff’s office of his hometown in Marietta, GA and interned at the Cobb Country District Attorney’s Office during high school, Linton Mann III ’07 said he observed very early on the impact of the law. “Those experiences taught me that our nation is one based on rules of law and that lawyers are instrumental in the creation and enforcement of those laws. Once I recognized that, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer.”
With experience in the both the Law School’s Children’s Education Law Clinic and the Death Penalty Clinic, Mann has had the opportunity to participate in the practice of law firsthand, representing and advocating for the rights of low-income children and assisting with death penalty cases in post-conviction litigation. “I decided to get involved because I wanted a more practical focus in my third year, and I got that in the clinics. Not only did I learn a great deal about the substantive law of each Clinic, but I also enhanced my time-management and organizational skills, and learned how to deal with clients.”
Mann says that he is excited about making the transition to law firm practice – after graduation he will join the litigation group of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York as an associate. “Every lawyer has the opportunity to give back to society though legal service. Whether it’s providing free legal assistance to someone who otherwise could not afford an attorney, using legal knowledge to write the laws, or using legal training to assist courts in interpreting the laws, lawyers are instrumental in making our society function. One of the reasons I can not wait to graduate is because once I am a lawyer, I can begin to contribute to society in all of these ways.”
During his time at Duke, Mann competed in several National Moot Court Competitions and served as co-chair of the Moot Court Board in his third year. He also served as a tour guide for the Law School’s Admissions Office, experiences he counts as among his most rewarding at the Law School.
“Every time I give a tour I am reminded of all the reasons I chose to attend Duke Law – from the camaraderie of the students, to the openness of the faculty, to the opportunities available at the Law School and the University. I really enjoyed helping the next generation of students decide whether Duke would be the right school for them. It’s the best way that I could think to give back to Duke.”
