Duke Law School cordially invites you to a discussion of Private Equity, Sovereign Funds, and the Global Credit Crunch on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 4:30 p.m. at the Duke University School of Law featuring three of the world’s most important investors. The panel discussion will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m., followed by a public reception from 6 to 7 p.m. A private dinner with the Duke Law Barrister Society will then be held from 7:15 – 8:45 p.m.
Panelists include:
John A. Canning Jr., chairman and co-founder of Madison Dearborn Partners, a private-equity firm based in Chicago. Prior to co-founding MDP in 1992, he spent 24 years with First Chicago Corp., most recently as executive vice president of The First National Bank of Chicago and president of First Chicago Venture Capital. Mr. Canning is a 1969 graduate of Duke Law School.
Stephen A. Schwarzman, chairman and co-founder of the Blackstone Group, a private-equity firm based in New York. Prior to the founding of Blackstone in 1985, he was the head of Lehman Brothers' global mergers and acquisitions team. A graduate of Harvard Business School, Mr. Schwarzman is the father and father-in-law to two 2006 Duke Law graduates.
Gao Xiqing, general manager and chief investment officer of the China Investment Corp., China's sovereign-investment fund. Mr. Gao has served as general counsel, director of public offerings, and vice chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and as vice chairman of China’s National Council for Social Security Fund. He is a 1986 graduate of Duke Law School and a member of the Duke University Board of Trustees.

Professor Cox is an internationally renowned expert in corporate and securities law and has published numerous books, articles, and commentary on market regulation and corporate governance. He is a member of the American Law Institute and ABA Committee on Corporate Laws and a past member of the New York Stock Exchange Legal Advisory Committee, and the National Association of Securities Dealers Legal Advisory Board.
