About the Library

Welcome to the Goodson Law Library. Our library was rededicated in November 2008 after a complete renovation and is named in recognition of the generous support of J. Michael Goodson '66. The library has been designed to meet the 21st century information needs of the Duke Law community, offering a variety of spaces for individual and collaborative study, providing ready access to library, media, and technology services, and highlighting the library's excellent collection of more than 625,000 volumes.

Our Services

The Goodson Law Library comprises one-half of the Duke Law School Information Services team (DLSIS), which also includes the Law School's Academic Technologies department. This close relationship is reflected in the unified service desk on Level 3, where library users receive streamlined, one-stop assistance from our highly knowledgeable and skilled staff:

  • The library’s Collection Services department manages the Circulation/Reserve Desk, which handles the borrowing, return, and renewal of all Law Library materials; the processing of payment for library fines; the delivery of materials from other Duke libraries; and interlibrary loan.   • The Reference Services department provides assistance with effective use of the library's resources, such as devising search strategies for locating information and providing specialized instruction on the use of print and electronic legal materials. (More about Reference Services)
  • The Academic Technologies Help Desk resolves computing and network issues, including questions related to hardware and software, wireless access, printing, and e-mail. The Help Desk also coordinates assistance with Law School classroom technology and media services. (More about the Help Desk)

Our Space

Our 2007-2008 renovation expanded public space throughout the library, which provides table seating for 300 and carrel space for 180. The Reading Room offers large tables for collaborative study, as well as comfortable soft seating near the expanded window wall. Additional study tables and soft seating are provided around the mezzanine on Level 4.

A range of small and large individual carrels, alcoves, and tables are also available on Levels 1, 2, and 4. Eight private study rooms are also available on Level 2 for the use of law students, all equipped with integrated videoconferencing and video recording capability.

The library provides complete wireless network coverage throughout the building, as well as power at all table and carrel seats to support laptop computers. Twelve public computer terminals are available in the Reading Room for quick access to the library’s electronic resources. Additional stand-up workstations are available on each floor of the library, as well as throughout the Law School building.

Student Opportunities

The Law Library also hires Duke undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students to work in circulation, which includes service desk staffing, reshelving library items, looseleaf filing, and other duties. Internship Opportunities

For currently-enrolled students of a library Master’s degree program, internship or field experience opportunities may be available in Reference (J.D. or law school enrollment required), Access and Collection Services, or Technical Services.
