Dale Stansbury joined the Duke Law faculty in 1946.  In the bulletin for 1947 he is listed not only as professor of law but law librarian as well. William R. Roalfe, Duke’s first law librarian, left in 1946 for the same position at Northwestern.  In the next three annual bulletins Stansbury is listed as Faculty Director of the Law Library and professor of law.  However in 1951 he is only listed as professor of law.  The bulletin does not list another law librarian or library director on the staff until 1972.

Stansbury served on the editorial advisory board of Law & Contemporary Problems for several years.  From 1956 to 1957 he was acting dean.  In 1961 he assumed emeritus status which he retained until his death in 1967.

Stansbury completed his BS at Valparaiso in 1914 and a LLB at Indiana University in 1917.  He served as Deputy Attorney General of Indiana twice, from 1918 to 1924 and again in 1928.  In 1929 he completed a JSD at Yale and later that year got his first position as law professor at Mercer University.  He was then dean and professor of law at Wake Forest College from 1935 to 1944.  He also spent a couple years on the faculty of the University of Tennessee law school before coming to Duke.
