Duke Law School welcomes Michigan Law Professor Carl Schneider Monday, Nov. 8 for a luncheon discussion about how people make choices in their careers. The event, which will take place at 12:15 in Room 3037 of the Law School, is sponsored by the Office of Career Services as part of its 1L Career Kickoff series designed to introduce first-year law students to considerations relating to navigating their careers in the legal profession.

Carl Schneider holds the Chauncey Stillman Professorship for Ethics, Morality, and the Practice of Law and is a Professor of Internal Medicine. He was educated at Harvard College and the University of Michigan Law School, where he was editor in chief of the Michigan Law Review. He served as law clerk to Judge Carl McGowan of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and to Justice Potter Stewart of the United States Supreme Court. He became a member of the Michigan Law School faculty in 1981 and of the Medical School faculty in 1998.

Professor Schneider has written extensively in several fields, including bioethics, professional ethics, professional education, family law, and constitutional law. He recently published (with Marsha Garrison) a casebook titled The Law of Bioethics: Individual Autonomy and Social Regulation. He is the author of The Practice of Autonomy: Patients, Doctors, and Medical Decisions (Oxford University Press, 1998), which examines how power to make medical decisions is and should be divided between doctors and patients and which analyzes the role of autonomy in American culture. As one reviewer said of the book, it uncovers a "great hole . . . for all to see: the failure of autonomy not only as reality but even as ideal."

Professor Schneider is continuing his study of the sociology, psychology, and law of decisions by investigating how people choose to enter a profession and build professional careers. For that investigation (to be published as At the Threshold: The Professional Choices of Young Lawyers) he is currently interviewing a sample of 1998 graduates of the University of Michigan Law School.
