Anne Gordon is a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of Externships at Duke Law School. In addition to directing the externship program, she also teaches a Life Design seminar, Social Justice Lawyering, and the Movement Lawyering Lab. A former criminal defense attorney, Anne teaches and writes about professional identity, teaching pedagogy, and lawyering for social change, and has published two recent articles on equitable teaching practices and clinic design. She serves on the Executive Committee for the American Association of Law Schools’ Clinical Section, as well as on the National Board of the ACLU.
Before joining Duke Law, Anne taught at Berkeley Law School, where she helped lead the Appellate Advocacy Program and served as a Senior Research Fellow at the California Constitution Center. She was also a distinguished visiting professor at the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey in Puebla, Mexico, where she taught professional skills and comparative constitutional law. Anne received her A.B. from Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs, and graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School. After law school, she clerked for Judge Boyce F. Martin, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She has also worked with refugees in Ethiopia, sex workers in Chicago, farmers in Cambodia, and separated families on the US-Mexico border.
